Sydney Swans Fans Rally for AFLW Amid Club Controversy

By Editor • August 23, 2026 • 2 min read

Supporters of the Sydney Swans flocked to the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday, determined to show their backing for the AFL Women's team during a historic double-header, despite the club's ongoing scandal. Among them was fan Teri, who carried a handmade sign proclaiming, "I'm here for the AFLW." She emphasized the importance of supporting the women in light of recent events, stating, "They still need our support."

The atmosphere was charged with emotion as the Swans faced a tumultuous week. Five players, including Isaac Heeney and Chad Warner, were suspended after breaching club drinking policies following a recent win. Compounding the issue, Victoria's sexual crimes squad is investigating allegations of sexual assault involving one of the players.

Teri, who has been a dedicated supporter for decades, expressed her heartbreak over the scandal. She noted, "As a fan, as a decades supporter, always thinking this club was something better… I thought they were much better than this." While she planned to support the women’s team, she left her attendance at the men’s game open-ended, acknowledging the impact on the entire club. "It’s got nothing to do with the women, and I think they are suffering as well," she remarked.

Other fans echoed similar sentiments. Meagan Masters, another long-time supporter, shared her feelings of devastation, describing the club's image as "wholesome" as shattered. "The actions of the five players was unacceptable for professional athletes," she commented, fully backing their suspension but remaining skeptical of the details surrounding the incident.

Despite the scandal, many fans anticipated a strong turnout at the SCG. David Lipman expressed confidence that supporters would rally to back the women’s team, while Chris Lewis, donning a GWS pride kit, articulated the struggle of explaining the situation to his children, who admired the implicated players. He too was undecided about staying for the men’s match.
