Pakistan Army Deployed in Rawalpindi for Six Months Ahead of Political Protests

By Editor • August 23, 2026 • 1 min read

In a move aimed at addressing potential security challenges, the federal government of Pakistan has sanctioned the deployment of three army companies in Rawalpindi for a six-month period. This decision, rooted in a request from the Punjab Home Department, comes just over a month prior to the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party's anticipated long march towards Islamabad on September 27, which is expected to attract around two million participants.

The order, dated August 21, cites the need for military presence to perform sensitive security duties and to swiftly manage any unforeseen circumstances. This deployment is made under Article 245 of the Constitution, which allows the armed forces to assist civilian authorities in maintaining law and order.

Rawalpindi, known for its proximity to Islamabad and its significance as a military hub, often sees increased security measures during political events and public demonstrations. The decision reflects growing concerns over maintaining order amid rising political tensions, especially as the PTI and PML-N parties engage in disputes over legal matters, including court directives regarding former Prime Minister Imran Khan's medical care.
