Tamar Adler Shares Her Culinary Favorites in Madrid Amidst Personal Triumph

Tamar Adler, a celebrated author and Vogue contributor, has turned her personal battles into a beautiful tribute to the joy of food in her new book, Feast on Your Life. Following a tumultuous autumn in 2023, marked by a deep struggle with depression, Adler found solace in the simple act of cooking. "I’d recently taken inventory of my life," she reflects, noting how her perceived failures overshadowed her successes. Yet, through her culinary journey, she discovered a way to reconnect with life’s pleasures.

The inception of Feast on Your Life was a gratitude list suggested by her husband, which evolved into a rich diary filled with sensory details about food and daily life. Cooking, Adler explains, engages multiple senses and demands full attention, providing a grounding experience in moments of darkness. "Food demands so much of our senses; it’s almost the perfect tool to redirect our focus to the present," she states.

Now residing in Madrid’s vibrant Las Letras neighborhood with her family, Adler describes her daily life as a constant immersion in beauty. She and her husband chose Madrid for its charm and their shared love for the Spanish language. "I have felt, since moving here, that my daily experience is sort of like a bath in beauty," she says, highlighting the city’s abundance of fountains and the serene presence of flowing water.

Adler’s deep appreciation for food and beauty makes her recommendations for local restaurants particularly insightful. Her top five spots in Madrid range from casual tapas bars to exquisite dining experiences. She frequently visits Dolores, known for its exceptional matrimonio tapas—anchovies paired with boquerones, made in-house. "It’s always packed, but the dish is worth the wait. They cure their anchovies in vinegar and serve them beautifully," she shares.

Another standout is Farah, run by Heba Kharouf, where Adler enjoys the whole lubina (sea bass) served with a mysterious sauce. "It’s just amazing. They also have a Middle Eastern salad with date syrup that’s truly great," she notes, praising the unique flavors and atmosphere of the restaurant.

Adler’s favorite dining destination is a small, seasonal restaurant known for its ever-changing menu. "Reservations open just days in advance because it’s so popular. The tortilla there is incredible, sometimes made with potato chips or shrimp, and it changes every time you go," she explains enthusiastically.

For a romantic evening, she recommends Ton Ton, a chic, intimate spot perfect for sharing small plates. "It’s a great place for a date night," she advises, mentioning the delicious artichoke and beef tartare as must-try dishes. Lastly, she highlights O'Pazo, renowned for its exceptional seafood. "Everything we ordered was perfect. The percebes were a fun adventure for the kids, and the pink shrimp from Palamos is a personal favorite of mine," she recalls.

Adler’s culinary journey is not just about food; it’s a testament to resilience and finding joy in everyday moments. Her experiences in Madrid, combined with her profound understanding of the healing power of cooking, create a compelling narrative that resonates with anyone seeking comfort and beauty in life's simplest pleasures.
