The Rise of the Beige Couch: A Look at Sofa Color Trends

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

A recent analysis of sofa colors in Ikea's catalogs from 1960 to 2021 reveals a striking transformation in consumer preferences, showcasing a dramatic shift towards muted tones.

The data visualization from the European Correspondent highlights this trend, indicating that since 2011, the majority of sofas have been predominantly gray or beige. In the earlier decades, vibrant colors like green and blue were popular, particularly in the 1960s and 70s, while the 90s celebrated bold patterns and hues. However, the 2000s marked the beginning of a color decline, leading to what some have termed the "great furniture blanding."

Despite Ikea's catalog being discontinued in 2021, their website reflects this ongoing trend, with gray couches leading sales at 131 options, followed closely by beige at 120. Other colors like blue and brown also feature, but the neutral palette clearly dominates.

Ikea's spokesperson noted that customer preferences have influenced these choices, emphasizing a recent rise in interest for more colorful furniture. As trends shift towards brighter shades, the company is beginning to reintroduce vibrant options, including yellow and patterned fabrics in their popular sofa lines.

While the era of "millennial gray" and "influencer beige" has been prevalent, there are signs of a resurgence in color. Architectural Digest has featured colorful sofas on magazine covers, and Pinterest's trend reports suggest a growing appetite for deeper hues. Toon Vos, who conducted the analysis, believes this may signal a return of color to our living spaces, reminiscent of the lively designs of the 90s.
