OpenAI's Innovative Donut-Shaped Device Set to Launch in 2027

OpenAI is making strides in artificial intelligence with plans to introduce a unique donut-shaped speaker designed for daily interaction. Slated for a 2027 release, this innovative device is expected to retail between $300 and $400.

Unlike traditional smart speakers, this portable device will be built from the ground up as an AI-focused computer, aiming to facilitate more natural conversations and assist users in various tasks. Bloomberg reported that its circular design enables easy one-handed mobility throughout the home.

The forthcoming device will feature speakers and microphones for voice commands and interactions. It is battery-operated, making it versatile for use in different settings, whether held in hand, placed on a bedside table, or set on a kitchen counter. Notably, it will include movable components to indicate processing and response times, giving it a more dynamic presence compared to current smart speakers.

Lighting features will communicate its listening status, enhancing the personal connection between the user and the device. Its operation will be reminiscent of the voice mode in ChatGPT, albeit with more advanced models for improved conversational engagement.

As the device learns over time, it will adapt its interactions, providing a tailored experience for each user. OpenAI aims for this speaker to be a more accessible entry into hardware, paving the way for future products that might eventually replace smartphones.

Equipped with cameras and sensors, the device will gather environmental information, using this data to better understand its surroundings. Designed in collaboration with LoveFrom, Jony Ive's design studio, this speaker promises a premium aesthetic and high-quality materials, including metal.

OpenAI has proposed a pricing strategy that positions the device above most existing smart speakers but below standard iPhones. This pricing strategy comes amid ongoing legal tensions with Apple, which has raised concerns about OpenAI’s development processes. Apple has accused OpenAI of misleading a supplier regarding a metal finishing technique, claiming they led the supplier to believe they had Apple's permission for their work.

In response, OpenAI has rejected these allegations as vague, asserting that their device does not infringe on any of Apple's trade secrets. They even conducted an internal investigation to confirm this stance, which they presented in court to counter Apple's claims.

The legal battle, however, poses potential risks to OpenAI's launch timeline. Apple recently sought a preliminary injunction against OpenAI, which could disrupt their planned rollout. OpenAI intends to unveil the device later this year, with a commercial launch planned for 2027, as development continues confidentially.

The conflict has intensified between the two tech giants, with OpenAI labeling Apple’s accusations as reckless and overly personal. OpenAI attorney Patrick Curran has emphasized that the lawsuit is based on misrepresentations and unfounded speculation.

This circular device also signifies a departure from Apple’s current home strategy, as the Cupertino company offers the HomePod line but lacks a battery-powered, AI-centric home device.
