Tragedy Strikes as Ferry Capsizes Off Northern Cyprus, Casualties Rise

At least seven lives have been lost and 23 individuals remain unaccounted for following a tragic ferry capsizing near the coast of northern Cyprus, according to Ünal Üstel, the region's prime minister. The incident occurred shortly after the ferry, carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members, departed from the popular resort town of Kyrenia.

The privately owned vessel, named Filo Jet, was scheduled to head to Turkey but faced delays due to adverse weather conditions. Reports indicate that the ferry began taking on water after being struck by two significant waves, leading to its capsizing.

Emergency services, including helicopters and coastguard boats, have been deployed to assist in the search and rescue efforts. As of now, Turkish authorities have reported that eight individuals have perished, with ongoing efforts to locate the missing passengers.

In the wake of this disaster, the ferry's captain and seven crew members have been detained as part of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Üstel emphasized the commitment to uncovering any negligence, stating that accountability will be pursued regardless of status.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirmed that search operations are proceeding without interruption. The operator of the ferry, Filo Denizcilik, has also expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
