Tragic Capsizing in Zimbabwe: Death Toll Reaches 80

By Editor • August 16, 2026 • 1 min read

The devastating capsizing of a ferry on Lake Kariba has led to a grim tally of 80 confirmed deaths as rescue teams continue their search efforts. On Sunday, authorities announced the recovery of eight additional bodies, escalating the total from the tragic incident that took place earlier this week.

The overloaded vessel, operated by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency, was authorized to carry 90 people but was found to be carrying 114 adults and several children when it overturned in turbulent waters on Tuesday. Most passengers were local villagers and fish traders, particularly from the Chalala fishing camp.

Rescue operations have been intense, with 25 bodies recovered on Saturday alone. Despite the ongoing efforts, as more bodies are discovered, concerns grow regarding the actual number of individuals aboard the ferry. The boat served as a crucial transport link for the rural communities around the lake to the town of Kariba, approximately 280 kilometers northwest of Harare.
