The recent capsizing of an overloaded ferry on Lake Kariba has resulted in a devastating death toll of 84, as authorities continue recovery efforts. The incident occurred on August 10, 2026, amidst strong waves, and the search for missing victims remains ongoing.

Initially, estimates suggested that around 153 people were aboard the vessel, which was only licensed to carry 90. Police have confirmed that 77 individuals were rescued, while the grim tally of confirmed deaths has steadily risen from 72 to 84 over the past week.

Among the victims are 18 children, with the youngest being just one year old. The ferry was on its way from Kariba to remote fishing communities, where transportation options are limited due to damaged roads.
