Tragic Ferry Capsizing Off Northern Cyprus Claims Lives

A devastating maritime accident off the coast of North Cyprus has led to at least seven fatalities and 23 individuals still unaccounted for after a ferry capsized. The incident occurred shortly after the privately-owned vessel departed from Kyrenia, carrying approximately 270 passengers and crew members.

According to reports, the ferry began taking on water shortly after its noon departure, heading towards Tasucu in Turkey. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as survivors clung to the overturned hull, awaiting rescue.

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman confirmed that 237 people were rescued, but expressed deep sorrow over the lives lost. Rescue operations are ongoing, involving local coast guard vessels and helicopters as they scour the waters for the missing.

The ferry, named 'FILOJET', was part of a regular shuttle service linking North Cyprus with Turkey. Following the incident, officials have noted that adverse weather conditions had affected the region, yet the ferry was deemed safe for travel at the time of departure. Prime Minister Unal Ustel emphasized that the focus remains on saving lives and coordinating rescue efforts among various agencies.
