A devastating helicopter crash in Samburu County, Kenya, on August 19, 2026, has resulted in the deaths of Ecuador’s intelligence chief Michele Sensi-Contugi and five American citizens.
The helicopter, carrying a pilot and six passengers, went down during a scenic flight near Mt. Ololokwe, a site known for its challenging terrain. All seven individuals aboard perished in the incident, confirmed by Fredrick Kabunge of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department.
Kenya's police chief, David Nkoroi, noted that rescue operations were hampered by darkness and the difficult landscape, leading to the suspension of recovery efforts until the following day. Images from the scene depicted flames and thick smoke billowing into the sky.
Transport Minister Roberto Luque mourned the loss of Sensi-Contugi, 42, who was appointed head of Ecuador’s National Intelligence Center in 2024 and was a close ally of President Daniel Noboa. Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department acknowledged the deaths of five American citizens, including Telemundo executive Jose Alberto Suarez, who was remembered as a dedicated colleague.
The cause of the crash remains undetermined, with investigations underway by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.
