Michael Wright, renowned for his role as the captivating lead singer in the R&B film “The Five Heartbeats,” has passed away at the age of 70 due to heart failure. The news was shared by his wife, Susan Wright, via an emotional Instagram post, where she expressed her deep sorrow over the loss of her beloved husband.

Wright's impressive career spanned numerous films and television shows. He gained significant recognition for his performances in the Vietnam War drama “Streamers,” which won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 1983 Venice Film Festival, and the coming-of-age film “The Wanderers.”

On television, he was a prominent figure in HBO’s acclaimed series “Oz” and the science fiction miniseries “V,” along with its sequels. His filmography also includes appearances in “Black Lightning,” “The Principal,” “Sugar Hill,” and “The Interpreter.”

Despite his varied roles, it was “The Five Heartbeats” that showcased his talents most prominently. In a 2021 interview, Wright reminisced about how a chance meeting with director Robert Townsend altered his career path. Originally, the role was intended for Denzel Washington, but Townsend recognized Wright’s talent during an impromptu screening of his work.

In her tribute, Susan Wright reflected on her husband’s legacy as a devoted family man and extraordinary artist, stating, “Your work will live forever, but your love will live even longer in the hearts of those who knew you best.”
