The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, resulting in tragic losses on both sides. On Saturday, August 22, 2026, Russian drone and missile strikes claimed at least three lives in Ukraine, while a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia's Krasnodar region resulted in two deaths.
In Kyiv, one person was killed and another injured when ballistic missiles targeted railway infrastructure overnight. This attack was part of a broader Russian offensive, with the Defence Ministry claiming to have struck a locomotive depot. Furthermore, in the Kyiv region, another missile strike claimed one life later that afternoon.
The violence follows a devastating drone strike on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hometown, which killed 16 individuals and left nine missing. Zelenskyy condemned the attack as a 'double-tap' strike, where the initial wave of drones was followed by a second assault targeting rescuers. The fire from this incident spread across a vast area, but has since been extinguished.
In the Zaporizhzhia region, Russian drone strikes led to one death, while three others were wounded in a minibus attack. Conversely, the Ukrainian strikes in Krasnodar killed two children and injured two adults.
The summer has seen a significant increase in large-scale Russian attacks, with Kyiv suffering the brunt of the assaults. Recent weeks have seen numerous casualties, including 17 deaths from a strike on the capital and its surroundings just weeks prior. The United Nations reported that Kyiv was among the hardest-hit cities in July, with 54 civilian deaths reported.
