Tropical Storm Dolly Emerges in the Atlantic, Set to Weaken

Tropical Storm Dolly has formed in the Atlantic Ocean, though it poses no immediate threat to land, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami. Forecasters anticipate that environmental conditions will lead to a rapid decline in the storm's strength starting Friday.

Dolly is the fourth named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which has already seen storms like Arthur, Bertha, and Cristobal. Interestingly, the naming of the storm does not relate to the recent passing of singer Dolly Parton.

The NHC and other weather agencies utilize names to facilitate clear communication about storm warnings. Names are selected for their simplicity and familiarity in the regions affected. Meanwhile, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted a below-average hurricane season, attributing this to El Niño, with expectations of eight to 14 named storms this year.
