Tropical Storm Moke is making its way toward Hawaii, bringing with it the potential for heavy rainfall and strong winds just a week after Hurricane Lala caused significant damage to the islands. As of Saturday morning, residents were bracing for the storm, which is expected to pass south of Hawaii Island overnight.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Moke was located approximately 684 kilometers (425 miles) south of Hilo and was moving west-northwest at a speed of 19 km/h (12 mph). The storm's maximum sustained winds were reported at around 85 km/h (50 mph).
Governor Josh Green has urged residents to prepare by stocking up on essentials, stating, “It could certainly have a big impact because we’ve already been hit hard.” He has authorized emergency accommodation for those in need and emphasized the importance of vigilance as the islands recover from the recent storm.
Moke is forecasted to deliver 130mm to 250mm (5 to 10 inches) of rain to the southeast and windward sides of the Big Island, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 380mm (15 inches). Meteorologist Casey Oswant indicated that while impacts will be felt, they are expected to be less severe than those caused by Lala.
