US President Donald Trump has confirmed plans to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year, marking the first encounter between the two during his second term. The announcement comes shortly after the United States reduced its military exercises with South Korea, a move Trump deemed necessary to foster dialogue.
When asked about the meeting, Trump stated, "Yeah, I will be," though he did not specify a date. During his previous term, Trump met Kim three times, famously noting their relationship involved exchanging “beautiful letters.”
In the lead-up to the meeting, Trump acknowledged North Korea's nuclear capabilities, referencing an estimate from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute that suggested North Korea has potentially assembled around 60 warheads. Despite these concerns, Trump expressed confidence in managing relations, asserting, "I know Kim Jong Un very well, and he’s going to be fine as long as we have a smart president.”
Recent military adjustments included scaling back joint drills from 11 to five days, aimed at easing tensions. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung praised Trump's efforts to create dialogue conditions, suggesting a shift from hostility to peace.
North Korea's Kim Yo Jong, however, claimed ignorance of any recent communication between her brother and Trump but acknowledged that their relations remain strong. As regional dynamics shift, Trump’s upcoming trip to China for the APEC summit in November may further influence these developments.
