U.S. Lifts Syria's Terrorism Designation, Opens Door for Investment

In a significant shift in foreign policy, the United States has officially removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism as of August 24, 2026. This decision marks the end of a designation that had imposed severe economic restrictions on the war-torn nation for decades.

The U.S. Department of State also revoked the terrorist designation of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly known as al-Nusra Front, which has been pivotal in the recent political landscape following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. With Ahmed al-Sharaa now leading Syria, the U.S. aims to promote stability and investment in the country.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the move will foster economic recovery, aligning with President Donald Trump's commitment to provide sanctions relief to Syria. However, the Treasury emphasized that this does not alter its stance on combating global terrorism.

Syrian officials have lauded the delisting, with Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaibani calling it a "historic milestone" that symbolizes Syria's dedication to international peace. Finance Minister Mohammed Barnieh remarked that this decision paves the way for increased investment and technological advancement in Syria.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism that this development will usher in prosperity for the Syrian people, eliminating significant barriers to private sector investment and aiding the country’s reintegration into the global economy.
