UAE Steps Up Cyber Defense with AI Amid Surge of Cyberattacks

As the geopolitical landscape shifts in the Gulf, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) finds itself at the frontline of an escalating cyberwarfare. Since February, the nation has reported a staggering increase in cyberattacks, particularly targeting its aviation, energy, and education sectors. The UAE Cyber Security Council revealed on August 10 that hackers have launched approximately 800,000 attack attempts daily—an alarming fourfold increase compared to pre-war levels.

The surge in cyber threats has been closely tied to the ongoing conflict between Iran, Israel, and the U.S., with Iranian hackers employing artificial intelligence (AI) in novel ways. AI is now integral to their operations, automating phishing emails, identifying vulnerabilities, and developing malicious software at a pace that security teams struggle to match. “The biggest change is speed,” noted Ram Narayanan, the Middle East country manager for Check Point Software Technologies, emphasizing that vulnerabilities now can be exploited in hours rather than days.

The UAE has faced threats from over 40 organizations across about 20 countries, many with connections to Iran, according to Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, head of the Cyber Security Council. The rise in AI-assisted cybercrimes has led to an uptick in scams, password theft, and fraudulent websites, particularly targeting key sectors like telecommunications and energy, which can cause extensive damage to the national infrastructure.

The Cyber Security Council has actively documented each cyber incident, outlining the methods employed by hackers, which include ransomware targeting government services and phishing campaigns against banks. Check Point identified a specific campaign aimed at internet-connected cameras, linked back to Iranian hackers, aimed at gathering data for missile strikes.

In a series of reported incidents, attacks began on February 28 coinciding with the start of the war. By April, the frequency of hacking attempts reached about 800,000 daily, significantly disrupting the UAE's cyber landscape. July saw national teams successfully thwart multiple attacks on financial institutions, utilizing AI to enhance the complexity of their methods.

In response to this rising tide of cyber threats, the UAE launched the “Cyber Factory” initiative on May 12. This program aims to develop in-house AI security systems to improve the nation’s defensive capabilities. Hadi Anwar, CEO of CPX, emphasized the initiative's goal of fostering national cyber sovereignty by leveraging local talent and advanced engineering.

As cyberattacks evolve, the UAE’s cybersecurity strategy is focused on enhancing the speed and precision of its defenses. “In many areas, we are already moving toward machine-to-machine cyber conflict,” Narayanan warned, underscoring the urgent need for rapid technological advancements to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated attackers.
