Ukraine Appeals to Elon Musk for Starlink Drone Operations Against Russia

By Editor • August 22, 2026 • 2 min read

In a bold move to enhance its military capabilities, Ukraine is seeking permission from Elon Musk to deploy Starlink-equipped drones for strikes on Russian missile launchers. This request highlights Ukraine's ongoing struggle to fend off relentless attacks from Russian forces, particularly as they face shortages of essential air defense systems.

The Financial Times reported that Ukrainian officials are looking to leverage Musk's satellite communications technology to guide drone strikes within Russian territory. This follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's earlier appeal to American leaders, including Donald Trump, for assistance in accessing Starlink's capabilities.

As the conflict intensifies, Ukraine is exploring alternative strategies to mitigate its dependence on US Patriot air defense systems, which are currently in short supply due to the United States' involvement in other global conflicts.

The urgency of Ukraine's situation was underscored by a recent attack in Kryvyi Rih, Zelensky's hometown, where Russian drones targeted a shopping center, resulting in 14 deaths and dozens of injuries. Zelensky characterized the assault as a 'double-tap strike,' where a follow-up attack occurred as rescue workers responded to the initial strike, further endangering lives.

The frequency and scale of Russian missile attacks have surged, with Kyiv being one of the hardest-hit areas. The United Nations reported at least 54 civilian casualties in July alone, pointing to an alarming trend of increasing violence against civilians.

In addition to the strike in Kryvyi Rih, another drone attack in the Kharkiv region resulted in the deaths of two elderly women, further amplifying the humanitarian crisis. Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept 107 out of 135 drones launched by Russia overnight, showcasing their ongoing efforts to protect their citizens.

On the diplomatic front, French President Emmanuel Macron, along with leaders from Germany and the UK, will co-host a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing on Monday, aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict and supporting Ukraine. President Zelensky is set to attend, indicating a continued commitment to international collaboration in the face of aggression.

Meanwhile, Russia continues to assert its military presence, recently test-firing anti-ship missiles in a disputed area claimed by Japan. This move, alongside Moscow's designation of independent news outlet Mediazona as a 'foreign agent,' reflects the Kremlin's tightening grip on information and military operations.

As the conflict evolves, the interplay between military strategy and international relations will be crucial for both Ukraine and Russia. With Ukraine's appeal to Musk, the potential for advanced technology to impact the battlefield could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of this ongoing war.
