Unique Documentary 'Strange Neighbors' to Kick Off Oldenburg Festival

This year's Oldenburg Internationales Film Festival will debut with a groundbreaking nature documentary titled Strange Neighbors, marking the first time a documentary has opened the German indie event.

Directed by Mi Steinbach, this film takes viewers on a journey through a pristine nature preserve on Schwarztonnensand, an island in the Elbe river. Over three years, Steinbach crafted a wordless narrative that focuses on the island's wildlife, devoid of human presence, interviews, or voiceovers.

“It was never my idea to make a natural history film,” Steinbach explained. “I wanted to convey something about this place and about us.” The documentary showcases diverse habitats home to species like white-tailed eagles and roe deer, juxtaposed against the backdrop of one of Europe's most industrialized areas.

Produced by Earth Cut Filmproduktion, Strange Neighbors is seeking distribution following its world premiere at Oldenburg, where it will be featured from September 16-20.
