US Imports Half of Venezuela's Oil Output Amid Controversial Relations

By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 1 min read

In a striking development, the United States is now importing around 500,000 barrels per day of oil from Venezuela, accounting for nearly half of the South American nation's total production, according to US Under Secretary of Energy Kyle Haustveit. This shift follows the US government's controversial actions over the past seven months, including the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the installation of an interim government.

Haustveit, speaking at a Houston industry event, emphasized that the oil being imported is specifically suited for US refineries, which are designed to process Venezuela's heavy, sour crude. With Venezuela possessing the largest proven oil reserves globally, estimated at 303 billion barrels, the revival of its oil exports is seen as mutually beneficial.

Venezuelan officials, including Jovanny Martinez from state oil company PDVSA, expressed optimism about increasing production, projecting an output of 1.245 million bpd by the end of August, marking a 19.7 percent rise in exports this year. Martinez highlighted ongoing efforts for energy reform, aiming to modernize the country's aging refineries.

Despite the apparent success, the Trump administration faces scrutiny regarding the handling of funds generated from Venezuelan oil sales, which reportedly exceed $13 billion this year. Critics, including the Council on Foreign Relations, have raised concerns about transparency and the potential entrenchment of a corrupt regime in Venezuela, particularly as the administration excludes opposition voices from discussions regarding the country's future.
