US National Debt Surpasses $40 Trillion Mark

By Editor • August 20, 2026 • 1 min read

The United States has officially crossed a significant financial milestone, with its gross national debt reaching $40.047 trillion for the first time, according to recent Treasury Department data. This surge comes much earlier than the Congressional Budget Office's expectations, which had estimated a 2026 figure of $39.4 trillion.

Of the total debt, $32.266 trillion is owed to the public, which includes private investors and foreign entities, while the remaining $7.782 trillion constitutes intragovernmental obligations. This staggering debt now equates to 124% of the nation’s GDP, the highest ratio since World War II.

Rising borrowing costs are compounding the situation, with the 30-year Treasury bond yield climbing to 5.3%, its highest level since 2007. The fiscal year ending September 30 is expected to see a deficit of $2.1 trillion, with the debt servicing costs projected to hit $1.4 trillion this year alone. Critically, Maya MacGuineas of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget highlighted that the national debt has doubled in the last decade and quadrupled in less than twenty years.
