Violence Erupts in Kenscoff as Gang Attack Claims 40 Lives

A brutal gang assault in Kenscoff, a municipality near Port-au-Prince, left around 40 people dead, marking a tragic escalation in ongoing violence in Haiti. The attack, which occurred on the night of August 23, 2026, targeted a church sheltering displaced individuals, as reported by the local mayor, Massillon Jean.

Describing the night as one of terror, Jean confirmed that many victims were executed and additional individuals were abducted. "We have counted around 40 bodies. Searches are continuing. Some people are still missing," he stated, highlighting the ongoing fear that grips the area plagued by gang activity for months.

In response to the horrific event, the office of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime expressed condolences to the victims' families and announced plans to send reinforcements to help restore security. The situation in Kenscoff reflects the larger crisis in Haiti, where nearly 1.5 million people are displaced and over five million face severe food insecurity, exacerbated by years of political instability and rampant gang violence.
