Volunteering in the Highlands: A Rewarding Experience

By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 1 min read

My recent two-day adventure in Wester Ross turned out to be unexpectedly fulfilling as I joined a conservation group to restore hiking paths in the breathtaking Highlands.

At the foot of Stac Pollaidh, I found myself knee-deep in bog, wielding a mattock to repair a hiking trail. The physical labor was grueling, yet I felt a sense of accomplishment as I cleared debris from a drain, allowing water to flow freely over the glistening rock beneath.

Traveling from Edinburgh, I came not for leisure, but to contribute to the hills, partnering with the Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland, which oversees many of the region’s paths while enjoying a cozy stay at the Ullapool youth hostel.
