Waymo has officially launched its next-generation robotaxi, named Ojai, available to all riders in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. This marks a significant step forward for the Alphabet company, which aims to enhance its fleet with vehicles that are not only cheaper to produce but also easier to maintain.
Currently, customers in these cities may request an Ojai when hailing a ride, with plans to expand to Denver, Las Vegas, and San Diego later this year. The Ojai model, which is set to complement Waymo's existing Jaguar I-Pace fleet, features approximately 300 units in operation at present.
Equipped with Waymo's sixth-generation self-driving technology, the Ojai is designed for versatility across various vehicle types. It also includes a revamped user interface and Google’s Gemini AI, serving as an in-car assistant. However, at its core, the Ojai is a minivan produced by Zeekr, a subsidiary of Geely Holding Group, built on a platform aimed at affordability and durability.
Despite its advantages, the Ojai's importation into the U.S. comes with challenges due to tariffs on vehicles made in China, which may affect operational costs. Research firm MoffettNathanson projects Waymo could import up to 5,000 Ojai vehicles by the end of 2026, significantly increasing its fleet size and enhancing its market presence.
