Reviving a Ruin: Designer Breathes New Life into a Historic Upstate NY Home

Tatyana Miron Ahlers is a whirlwind of creativity and energy, as described by her friend Sarah Sanneh, owner of Brooklyn’s Pies and Thighs. Known for her eclectic style and a touch of whimsy, Ahlers has reimagined a dilapidated stone house in Carmel, New York, into a stunning home that tells a story.

Ahlers, who co-founded Pappas Miron Design, embraced the unique challenges of the house, which had fallen into neglect by the 1970s. Originally a grand estate with a rich history, the property was left to deteriorate, becoming a shadow of its former self with tales of mold and a troubled past. When the Trail Club, a local community founded in 1924, acquired the house to prevent development, Ahlers’ friend from the board urged her to take a look.

“You’re the only one for this house,” he said, and despite her husband Werner’s skepticism over purchasing a “money pit,” Ahlers saw potential. “I love entertaining,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of creating inviting spaces.

The restoration took sixteen months, focusing on preserving the home’s original charm while updating its functionality. Ahlers made minimal structural changes, opting instead to remove unsightly 1970s additions and restore original architectural details. She chose to keep the floorplan intact, which allowed her to maintain the home’s historic character.

In the living room, a blend of custom furnishings and vintage pieces creates a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere. The artwork by Domenick Capobianco and a 19th-century embroidered panel from Millea Bros complement the custom sofas covered in luxurious Claremont velvet. “There are no rules about styles and matching,” Ahlers shared, emphasizing her philosophy of mixing materials and styles.

Ahlers’ approach to design is deeply personal, as seen in the library adorned with George Spencer moss strié fabric, and the dining room where she restored a door based on original photographs. Each room is a testament to her vision, with unique elements like the custom kitchen cabinets inspired by 1950s English kitchens, complete with vintage stools and a custom-designed hood.

The primary bedroom showcases Ahlers’ knack for blending textures, featuring a custom bed upholstered in silk and antique fixtures. In contrast, her daughter Oona’s room reflects a more playful side, painted in a soft violet that Oona requested, complete with vintage accents.

Throughout the home, Ahlers has selected a color palette that resonates with nature, using earthy tones and textures that echo the surrounding woods. “I love color and intimacy,” she said, highlighting her preference for materials that create a warm, inviting environment.

The renovation process was not without challenges; Ahlers had to persuade millworkers to create intricate cabinetry that reflects her design philosophy. “It’s not that efficient, but I love the simplicity,” she explained regarding the custom drawer fronts.

Ultimately, the project was a labor of love, culminating in a home that balances history with modern living. The heart of the house is not only its aesthetic appeal but also the sense of community it fosters, aligning with the Trail Club’s ethos of togetherness.

As Ahlers continues to entertain friends and family within these walls, she has created a home that is as much a part of the landscape as the trails outside, embodying the spirit of living well and embracing the beauty of imperfection.
