Weber Discontinues AI Features in June Oven as Cheaper Alternatives Emerge

By Editor • August 16, 2026 • 1 min read

In a surprising move, Weber is set to disable the advanced AI features of its June Oven, reducing the once high-tech appliance to a basic toaster. This change, effective September 22, means the oven will lose its cloud connectivity, app support, and the AI camera that originally distinguished it in the market.

The June Oven, which debuted at a hefty price point of $1,500, was a pioneer in food recognition technology. Fast forward to today, and similar capabilities can be found in air fryers priced under $100, signaling a shift in consumer accessibility to smart cooking technology. Weber's decision not to issue a formal announcement and instead notify owners via email has sparked speculation about the company's future priorities.

Interestingly, Daewoo's Actuate air fryer embodies the essence of the June Oven’s once-exclusive feature. Priced around $90, it uses an internal camera to identify various foods and automatically selects cooking settings with no required app or subscription. Other brands, like Culinix and Emerson, are also introducing products with AI capabilities but with different approaches—Culinix’s fryer recognizes specific foods, while Emerson’s SmartVoice relies on voice commands for operation.

Meanwhile, competitors like Xiaomi and Dreo are taking a different direction altogether. Xiaomi’s Mijia Pro adds steaming functionalities, whereas Dreo’s ChefMaker utilizes a probe to measure meat temperatures directly, eliminating guesswork. This evolution in kitchen technology raises a significant question: will consumers prefer ownership of smart features, or will they be comfortable renting them through subscriptions?
