Wes Streeting Highlights Surge in Homophobic Abuse Since Becoming Defence Secretary

Since taking on the role of Defence Secretary in July, Wes Streeting has encountered unprecedented levels of homophobia, stating he has received more online abuse in three weeks than throughout his entire life. Speaking on LBC’s All Talk podcast, he expressed disbelief at the hostility directed toward him, emphasizing that some struggle with the notion of a gay individual leading the UK armed forces.

Streeting made history as the first openly gay person to hold this position, a significant shift from a time when LGBT+ individuals were banned from military service. He recalled a touching moment in his first week when a member of the Ministry of Defence expressed pride in having a gay Defence Secretary, highlighting progress from past discrimination.

Despite the negativity, Streeting sees his role as an opportunity to challenge lingering stereotypes and demonstrate resilience. Addressing the issue at the Edinburgh Fringe, he noted the stark contrast between the media's muted response to his appointment and the overwhelming online vitriol.
