WordPress.com Launches Free Education Plan for Students and Teachers

By Editor • August 17, 2026 • 1 min read

Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, has unveiled a new initiative aimed at educators and students with the launch of its WordPress.com Education plan. This program provides a comprehensive suite of tools tailored for classroom use, offering each student a full WordPress.com domain along with free domain names under the .blog or .art extensions.

Announced during the annual WordCamp US conference, the education plan allows teachers to set up accounts for their students free of charge for the first year, eliminating the need for credit cards or trial periods. This initiative is designed to facilitate website-building projects within educational settings.

Unlike basic offerings, this plan includes 6 GB of storage, site backups, staging sites, and plugin support, further enhancing its usability. Following the initial year, students can continue using the service for $2 a month, or their sites will revert to a free plan, preserving all content.

A pilot program involving 5,000 students across 27 countries showed promising results, with 88.9% of educators noting improved employability for students and 81.5% reporting enhanced entrepreneurial skills.
