Yayoi Kusama, Iconic Polka Dot Artist, Passes Away at 97

Yayoi Kusama, the celebrated Japanese artist known for her vibrant polka dot creations, has died at the age of 97. Her studio announced her passing on August 14 at a Tokyo hospital, although they did not disclose the cause of death.

In a heartfelt tribute, the Yayoi Kusama Studio expressed that she continued to paint until her last days, embodying her lifelong exploration of love and the eternal soul. "We will carry forward Kusama's wishes and, through art, continue to bring hope and strength for the future to people around the world," the statement read.

Kusama, a major figure in contemporary art, gained global recognition with her captivating installations and paintings showcased at renowned institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Museum Ludwig in Germany. Her art, characterized by repetitive motifs—particularly her iconic dots—brought a unique psychedelic flair to the world of visual expression.

"Polka dots are fabulous," Kusama declared in a 2012 interview, where she sported her signature orange bob and polka dot attire. Her ambition was clear: "I want to create a thousand paintings, maybe two thousand paintings. I will keep painting until I die." This relentless passion for her craft defined her life.

Despite being plagued by mental health issues throughout her life, Kusama broke barriers by moving to New York in 1957, becoming one of the first Japanese women to pursue art in the city. Although she faced years of economic hardship and obscurity, her dedication to her polka dot vision never wavered. She eventually gained fame, collaborating with luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and achieving record auction prices for her works.

In 2016, she received Japan's prestigious Order of Culture award, further solidifying her status as a leading figure in the art world. Upon receiving the award, she expressed her unwavering commitment to art, stating, "I feel there is little left in my life, but I am now still fighting to the death for my art."

The announcement of her death prompted a wave of tributes from fans, artists, and institutions worldwide, including messages from notable figures such as Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike and artist Yoshitomo Nara. Nara respectfully referred to her as "Kusama-sensei," acknowledging her influence and legacy.
