Zelensky Dismisses Deputy Presidential Aide Amid Corruption Allegations

By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 1 min read

In a significant move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has terminated the position of Iryna Mudra, deputy head of the presidential office, following revelations from anti-corruption agencies about a money laundering scheme involving high-ranking officials.

The announcement was made through a decree on the presidential website, coinciding with investigations led by Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO). These agencies revealed that the scandal includes a group suspected of laundering 150 million hryvnias (approximately $3.35 million), allegedly linked to an energy corruption case.

In a related political shakeup, Ukraine's parliament has confirmed Yevhenii Khmara as the new defence minister. This appointment follows the dismissal of Mykhailo Fedorov, who had previously called for elections during wartime, a request that contradicts existing Ukrainian law during ongoing conflict.

As the nation grapples with governance challenges amid the war, Fedorov's remarks mark a notable first among prominent political figures since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022. Meanwhile, Andrii Sybiha has been reinstated as foreign minister, securing the support of 266 lawmakers.

The ongoing conflict remains tumultuous, with Russian forces reportedly capturing the settlement of Vodianske in Donetsk. Additionally, a recent Russian drone strike in Kherson resulted in four fatalities and injuries to several others, underscoring the persistent dangers faced by civilians.
