Zillow and Redfin Resolve FTC Antitrust Dispute

By Editor • August 24, 2026 • 1 min read

Zillow and Redfin have officially settled a legal dispute with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and five states, concluding a contentious antitrust case stemming from a 2025 partnership. The agreement was revealed on Monday, just as the case was poised for trial.

The controversy arose from Redfin's decision to display Zillow’s rental listings on its platforms, a move the FTC argued could stifle competition in the rental-advertising market. This partnership had the potential to hinder Redfin from entering the rental advertising sector for up to nine years. The FTC, along with state attorneys general from Arizona, Connecticut, New York, Virginia, and Washington, claimed Zillow paid Redfin $100 million to prevent direct competition.

In the settlement, Redfin is mandated to re-engage in the rental advertising business, lifting previous restrictions on its ability to compete. While Redfin can continue showcasing Zillow's listings, it now has the flexibility to pursue its own advertising and rental clients without sharing sensitive business information with Zillow.
