Aliyah Bah Launches Fabtopia: A Fashion Brand Centered on Black Women and Inclusivity

Aliyah Bah, popularly known for her music and unique style under the moniker Aliyah’s Interlude, has officially launched her alternative fashion brand, Fabtopia, marking a significant milestone in her career. “I will not leave this earth without having a fashion brand,” Bah declared, and she’s made that ambition a reality with her inaugural collection.
Unveiled on Tuesday, Fabtopia embodies Bah’s self-created aesthetic known as #Aliyahcore, characterized by bold and eclectic styles. The collection offers a range of clothing from leg warmers and handbags to crop-top and mini-skirt sets, catering to sizes XS through 3X. Priced between $30 and $60, these pieces are designed to be accessible to a wide audience.
The journey to launch began two years ago when Bah, inspired by her father’s encouragement, decided to create her own brand after noticing other companies capitalizing on her image. “He put that battery in my back that had me thinking, ‘Okay, you need to lock the fuck in,’” she recalls.
Finding the right name was a challenge, but after considering influences from her childhood—like Barbie’s “Fairytopia” and the Fruitopia drink—Bah settled on Fabtopia, a “utopia of fabulousness.” Her vision for the brand is rooted in self-acceptance and body positivity, emphasizing that everyone should feel fabulous in their clothing.
Bah’s design approach reflects a desire for individuality within a collective aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from iconic girl groups such as the Spice Girls and K-pop stars, she aims for her clothing to foster a sense of unity and joy among wearers. “I want this to be something that you can wear with your girls and go out, and people be like, ‘Oh, y’all look so cute,’” Bah explains.
Inclusivity is a cornerstone of Fabtopia, as Bah aims to challenge the fashion industry’s often limited size offerings. She argues that plus-size women deserve stylish options, stating, “A lot of brands do the cop-out thing… but it wasn’t that hard to get bigger sizes.” Her commitment to inclusivity is evident in the collection’s size range, which extends to 3X, and she meticulously ensured proper fit through extensive collaboration with manufacturers.
Emphasizing representation, Bah made a conscious decision to highlight Black women and plus-size models in her brand’s first campaign. “Fabtopia will 100% be putting Black women first… although this is a brand for everybody,” she asserts. This commitment is reflected in her marketing strategy, which notably directed 90% of PR packages to Black influencers.
Looking ahead, Bah has ambitious plans for Fabtopia, envisioning runway shows, community events, and even a standalone store. “I want to have a bigger impact so that my clothes are not just about buying stuff,” she shares. “It’s more about entering a universe and a culture of queer joy, Black joy, alternative Black girl joy.” With Fabtopia, Bah seeks to create a cultural movement that resonates beyond fashion.
