An Architect's Bold Leap: The 1sqm Treehouse Office in Munich

In a striking departure from traditional office spaces, architect Benedikt Hartl has established a unique workspace—an innovative treehouse office measuring just one square meter. This unconventional setup, named Baumhaus Office, is perched on the campus of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, allowing Hartl's architecture practice, Opposite Office, to circumvent the exorbitant commercial rents of Munich.

The Baumhaus Office is crafted from spruce timber, plywood, and features an aluminum shell that Hartl humorously likens to a "UFO." Accessible via a ladder, the tiny workspace is equipped with shelving, a compact desk, and fold-down panels, accommodating two to three people at a time. A domed skylight offers a refreshing view of the treetops, contrasting the typical office ceiling.

Defying Conventional Office Norms

Hartl's decision to ascend into the trees rather than engage with Munich’s steep rental market demonstrates a radical rethinking of what an office needs to be.
