In the heart of Berlin lies BWGTBLD, a production company founded by Philipp Ramhofer in 2012, that transcends the traditional concept of an office. What began in Ramhofer's bedroom in Solingen has now transformed into a stunning headquarters housed in a historic townhouse, where creativity and art flourish.
A Historic Transformation
Located on Neue Schönhauser Straße in the Mitte district, the building is a neo-renaissance masterpiece designed by architect Alfred Messel, dating back to the 1890s. Originally a communal dining hall for workers, it has served multiple purposes over the years, including a cinema. When Ramhofer acquired the property, he envisioned it as more than just a workspace; he aimed to create an environment that celebrates art and creativity. 'An office can be a devastating place… So I asked myself, what would have to change to create the exact opposite?' he reflects. The result is a space that invigorates creativity rather than stifles it.
A Dynamic Art Experience
BWGTBLD is a unique blend of office and art gallery. Inside, visitors encounter a rotating collection of artworks from both established and emerging artists. Ramhofer, who has been collecting art for over four years, emphasizes the importance of acquiring pieces he truly loves. His collection includes works by prominent artists like Wolfgang Tillmans and Tim Breuer, as well as innovative designs that blend humor and materiality. 'What attracts me is hard to articulate,' he shares, describing his preference for evocative, emotional pieces.
Engaging the Public
Every few months, BWGTBLD opens its doors to the public, turning the office into a museum featuring curated art tours led by Ramhofer and an in-house curator. This initiative not only showcases his collection but also reflects his desire to provide a refreshing alternative to the often homogenized aesthetics seen in contemporary design. Ramhofer's approach to curation is both spontaneous and meticulous, allowing the space to evolve continuously with each new piece acquired. 'I hold an almost spiritual belief that people are meant to create, and that what they create is meant to be shared,' he states, highlighting his commitment to fostering a vibrant creative community.
