Innovative Fusion of Furniture and Rugs Showcased at London Design Festival

In an exciting blend of contemporary aesthetics and historical craftsmanship, the exhibition 'Progressive Permanence' is set to captivate design enthusiasts during the London Design Festival. Hosted by Max Radford Gallery in collaboration with renowned rug producer Christopher Farr, the event features a unique pairing of modern furniture and iconic archival rugs.

The exhibition showcases the works of up-and-coming designers like Lewis Kemmenoe and LS Gomma alongside celebrated artists such as Gary Hume and Louise Bourgeois. This fusion not only highlights the creativity that transcends time but also encourages a new dialogue in interior design.

Celebrating Design Heritage

Located in Shoreditch, Christopher Farr’s studio serves as the perfect backdrop for this exhibition, which marks the first collaborative effort between Radford and Farr. Since 1988, Farr has been dedicated to preserving the art of weaving while exploring innovative design expressions, whereas Radford has been championing emerging talents since the launch of his gallery in 2020.

Radford describes Farr as an “OG supplier” of rugs, emphasizing the significance of the collaborations with distinguished artists. He carefully selected pieces from Farr’s extensive archives, creating a platform where contemporary designers can be showcased alongside respected names from the 20th century.

Dynamic Pairings

The exhibition features striking combinations, such as Carsten in der Elst's 'Graywacke OffCut Chair' paired with Gunta Stölzl's abstract tapestry 'Plate 111'. Another notable pairing includes LS Gomma's bold orange 'XR Mesh 2-seater' alongside Bourgeois’ monochrome text piece, 'Has The Day Invaded The Night? Has the Night Invaded The Day?'.

Additionally, Tessa Silva’s sculptural bench complements Romeo Gigli’s vibrant rug, while chairs from Kemmenoe’s 'Quilted Fragments' series are displayed with Hume’s minimalist green rugs. Radford notes that these works exist in a dialogue, enhancing the overall visual experience rather than merely serving as functional pieces.

As the exhibition runs from September 15 to 20 at Christopher Farr, it promises to offer visitors an opportunity to appreciate the blend of modern innovation and historical artistry, celebrating the potential for contemporary designers to become the classics of the future.
