Renowned Finnish design meets contemporary Japanese craftsmanship in a striking new collaboration between Artek and Hender Scheme. The collection, which includes a unique leather-wrapped version of Artek's iconic 'Stool 60', was recently announced and will debut at the London Design Festival 2026, ahead of its global release on October 10.
The centerpiece of this innovative collection features Artek's modernist aesthetic reimagined with natural vegetable-tanned leather. The collaboration presents eight distinct products, showcasing the elegance of Finnish wild birch and the rich texture of leather, both of which evolve beautifully over time.
Among the highlights are the circular tops of classic Artek tables and stools, now adorned with leather to enhance their visual appeal and functionality. Additionally, furniture 'shoes' designed for Alvar Aalto's classic L-legs will offer practical benefits, helping to prevent scratches and reduce noise for a more serene environment.
Also included is the 'A330 Golden Bell' pendant light, a sculptural masterpiece from 1953 that has been encased in layers of natural leather using advanced 3D printing techniques. Inspired by Aino Aalto's 1937 'Riihitie' ceramic plant pots, the collection further expands into accessories like leather coasters, a key holder, and a clock.
Hender Scheme’s founder Ryo Kashiwazaki emphasized the importance of time in the design process. He explained that the materials used in the collection—birch and leather—age at different rates, resulting in products that continuously change and develop character through their daily use. This philosophy of viewing products as living entities that evolve with their owners is central to Hender Scheme's brand identity.
Kashiwazaki, who established Hender Scheme in 2010, draws inspiration from natural materials and the idea of gender-less design. His passion for Artek began long before this collaboration, having visited Aalto’s studio during his honeymoon, which sparked a long-term admiration for the brand. The collaboration emerged organically over five years, beginning with informal discussions and evolving into a partnership based on shared values.
When asked about the essence of Hender Scheme, Kashiwazaki stated, "Our products are not finished at the point of sale—they are completed by the user through the process of ageing and daily use." This belief resonates throughout the collection, as every piece encourages personal stories to be woven into its surface.
The partnership also emphasizes the delicate balance between design and functionality. Kashiwazaki explained that while their designs maintain a minimalist aesthetic, they focus on creating unique, one-of-a-kind pieces rather than mass-produced items. This approach reflects a commitment to craftsmanship and a desire for sustainability in design.
As the collection gears up for its official launch, anticipation builds around the innovative integration of leather into Artek’s classic forms. With each piece, the collaboration not only celebrates the rich histories of both brands but also paves the way for future explorations in materials and design philosophy.
