Ayong Son’s Artistic Awakening: Leaving Client Work for Daily Creativity

After years in the demanding agency life of Seoul, artist Ayong Son has redefined her artistic journey by focusing on personal expression. Now based in Berlin, Son abandoned client-driven projects to embrace a more fulfilling creative routine.

Her current endeavor, titled Unfinished Finished, poses a profound question: "What cannot be copied?" Son reflects on the uniqueness of her artistic process, emphasizing that while AI can replicate images, it cannot replicate her personal experiences or the time invested in her creations.

To nurture her creativity, Son has adopted a daily practice of drawing five things, allowing for flexibility and growth in her work. "If I make something bad today, I can always draw five more things tomorrow," she says, illustrating her commitment to continual improvement.

Among her standout works are large-scale floor pieces made from hand-cut paper circles, showcasing vibrant colors and organic shapes. These artworks, photographed during their creation, capture the chaos of her studio environment, revealing her process rather than concealing it.

Son embraces the dualities in her art, merging completeness with incompleteness and blending retro with modern aesthetics. She believes that art is as essential as food or shelter, enriching lives and prompting deeper reflections.
