Naomi Osaka lit up Arthur Ashe Stadium with her striking fashion statement and impressive performance, defeating Anastasia Zakharova in straight sets, 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (7/3).
The two-time US Open champion showcased a hooded tunic adorned with press clippings from her past tournament appearances, complemented by a flowing white tulle train, making her the standout fashion icon of the tournament.
Osaka, who previously paid homage to her heritage and other inspirations at prior majors, now drew influence from NBA legend Allen Iverson for this ensemble. "It's my tribute to Iverson," she noted, explaining her desire to express herself through her attire. "Nike said basketball, so I said, 'You want basketball, I'll give you basketball.'"
Despite a few nerves and a tough match, Osaka managed to push through the tie-breaks, maintaining focus late into the night. "I wanted to come out and compete… I was a little rusty," she admitted, as she now looks ahead to facing Kateřina Siniaková in the second round.
