Belfast Band Turns Fungus into Art for Unique Album Cover

In a creative twist that merges science and art, Belfast's Robocobra Quartet has crafted a striking album cover for their ambitious 100-track release, 'Hundred Pieces'. The band took an unorthodox approach, cultivating 100 petri dishes filled with colourful mould as a visual representation of their music.

Saxophonist Thibault Barillon shares that the inspiration came quite spontaneously. He began experimenting with growing various types of fungus at home, without any initial intention of linking it to their album. "I found joy in inventing my own techniques for what type of mould would grow from different organic matter I'd put on the plate," he explains. This organic experimentation drew parallels with the band's creative process, highlighting moments of serendipity within their music.

The resulting images, each showcasing a unique growth pattern, were meticulously photographed from the same angle, presenting a uniform aesthetic that mirrors the band's approach to their music. As each petri dish transformed, so too did the band's understanding of their artistic journey. This experimental artwork will accompany each of the album's tracks and will feature a GIF of the dishes on Spotify for their key single, 'Haha', set to release soon.
