Collective Throne Emerges in Greece's Western Horizon

At the scenic western edge of Greece, a remarkable installation titled West/End (For those who made it this far) has been unveiled, inviting visitors to engage with both the landscape and the horizon in a communal experience. Designed by artist Dimitris Kontodimos during the Ionian Lab 2026 residency on the island of Othoni, this four-level platform stands as a unique blend of art and functionality.

Measuring 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.25 meters, the installation is constructed from 22 mm MDF panels, which Kontodimos crafted on-site over the course of two to three days. The design encourages visitors to ascend its stepped levels, offering a space to gather and contemplate the breathtaking view of the Ionian Sea. This innovative approach transforms a previously unoccupied area into a temporary vantage point for collective observation.

Historical Connections and Symbolism

The positioning of West/End is deeply significant, as it faces the setting sun, intertwining the physical landscape with the rich history of migration associated with the island. The Greek term for 'west', dysi, reflects the ancient notion of the sun sinking below the horizon, symbolizing departure and new possibilities. This multifaceted interpretation positions the horizon as not merely an endpoint but a gateway to potential futures.

Kontodimos emphasizes that the title of the installation plays with notions of arrival and success, inviting contemplation on the journey that brought individuals to this point. This ephemeral structure will remain on Othoni until September 2026, already drawing visitors who instinctively understand its purpose. According to Kontodimos, people have begun to climb, sit, and engage with the piece, often lingering until the sun sets completely. He notes, "No one needed to be told what it was for. They stayed until the sun was gone, then a little longer." As such, West/End not only enhances the natural beauty of Othoni but fosters a sense of community as individuals come together to share in the experience.
