Boris Johnson Criticizes Putin After Narrow Escape from Drone Attack

The former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, has strongly condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin following a drone strike that targeted a train line he had just vacated near the Ukraine-Poland border. This incident occurred on Sunday morning, shortly after Johnson and several European officials attended a security conference in Kyiv.

Johnson's diplomatic train departed Yahodyn station ahead of schedule due to intelligence warnings about possible attacks. Moments later, a Russian drone struck the railway line behind them, damaging a passenger train that had been evacuated prior to the incident. Thankfully, no injuries were reported as a result of the attack.

Targeted Attack?

Ukrainian rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia suggested that the drone strike may have been aimed specifically at Johnson's train, stating it was “quite possible” that the attack was intended for the dignitaries on board. In a statement on Telegram, they revealed that the train had left earlier than planned due to the ongoing threat of Russian air strikes.

Johnson's Response and Call to Action

Expressing his outrage, Johnson remarked, “I don’t know what warped logic drove Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border this morning.” He emphasized the senselessness of such attacks against civilians and reiterated the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems for Ukraine. Johnson also called for the unfreezing of Russian assets to support Ukraine's defense efforts, highlighting that over €140 billion remains in a Belgian bank account, alongside £10 billion in London.

As the conflict continues to escalate, Johnson's remarks underline the ongoing risks faced by officials in the region and the stark realities of the war that Ukraine endures daily.
