Cape Town is setting its sights on an ambitious goal: attracting over 5 million visitors and boosting its tourism contribution to the local economy to more than R30 billion. As Tourism Month kicks off, the City is leveraging digital marketing and international flight connections to turn online interest into real-world bookings.
Enhancing Digital Outreach
The City of Cape Town is shifting its focus from merely tracking social media impressions to prioritizing genuine engagement and conversions in its tourism campaigns. Alderman Vos emphasized that successful marketing must translate into actual visits. The City’s latest initiative, the 'This Is Cape Town' campaign, has already made waves, reaching 55 cities across six continents and generating an impressive 250 million impressions on Meta platforms.
Strengthening Connectivity
With direct flights to 31 international destinations, Cape Town is improving its accessibility. Significant capacity increases on routes to key cities such as Dubai, London, and São Paulo indicate the City’s growing status as a global travel destination. Vos noted that enhancing flight options is a crucial step in attracting visitors, especially from emerging markets like India and China, while maintaining connections with regions like Africa and North America.
Community and Infrastructure Focus
The City is also refining its Tourism Strategy, which seeks input from various sectors including transport and safety. Recognizing that a tourist's experience begins long before they check into a hotel, Cape Town aims to ensure reliable transport, clean public spaces, and well-managed coastal areas. Vos reiterated that the quality of life for residents often enhances the appeal for visitors, creating a symbiotic relationship that benefits both locals and tourists.
