Cape Town Shines with Dual African Tourism Awards Ahead of Global Finals

Cape Town has secured two prestigious titles at the 2026 World Travel Awards, being named Africa's Leading City Destination and Africa's Leading Meetings & Conference Destination. This recognition was unveiled during the World Travel Awards Africa Gala Ceremony held in Zanzibar on August 28, solidifying Cape Town's status as a premier tourist hub.
The city has now clinched the title of Africa's Leading City Destination for six consecutive years, showcasing its appeal over competing cities like Durban, Johannesburg, and Nairobi. The Meetings & Conference award marks a significant comeback for Cape Town, which last held this title in 2013 after Durban dominated the category from 2017 to 2025.
Tourism remains a vital part of Cape Town's economy, with direct spending hitting R24.5 billion in 2025. The economic impact is profound, contributing R23 billion to the Gross Value Add and supporting over 106,000 jobs, representing about 6.2% of the city's employment. Notably, international visitors accounted for a sizable portion of this economic activity, with 1.44 million foreign overnight tourists recorded in 2025.
Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, emphasized that the dual accolades highlight the city's diverse strengths in tourism, from leisure to business events. As Cape Town prepares for the World Travel Awards Grand Final, the city not only enhances its reputation but also underscores the significant economic benefits derived from both leisure and business tourism.
