Women Conquer the Andes: A Journey Through Peru's Cordillera Huayhuash

After months of dedicated training, Tammy Ballantyne Webber embarked on a remarkable two-week trek in Peru’s Cordillera Huayhuash alongside 12 adventurous women from GirlsTrek, Australia. This high-altitude journey not only challenged their physical limits but also offered breathtaking vistas, ancient history, and unforgettable camaraderie.

The trek commenced on July 5 in Lima, where the group met for the first time, sharing excitement over a day of exploration in the vibrant capital. They enjoyed a scenic stroll along the Miraflores esplanade and participated in an impromptu Zumba class at an outdoor gym. The day culminated with a guided tour of historic Lima, featuring the stunning Basilica and Convent of St. Francis, followed by a delicious dinner of local ceviche and refreshing pisco sours.

On the following day, the group set off on a nine-hour bus ride to Huaraz, the gateway to the Andes. As they ascended, the snow-capped peaks of the Huayhuash range came into view, setting the tone for the challenges ahead. Acclimatization began with a strenuous hike to Churup Lake, and soon they were camping at higher altitudes, where the true essence of the trek revealed itself.

The Cordillera Huayhuash circuit provided eight days of extreme trekking, with the team navigating harsh weather, breathtaking landscapes, and high-altitude passes, including the daunting Trapecio Pass at over 5,000 meters. Despite battling altitude sickness in the early days, Tammy noted the strength of their collective spirit as they supported one another through the physical and mental hurdles.

Everyday moments turned into cherished memories: sharing coca tea, celebrating birthdays with cake, and enjoying picnic lunches at stunning vantage points. Each night, they would huddle in sleeping bags, warmed by hot water bottles, listening to the soothing sounds of nature and the cheerful banter of their Peruvian guides.

Amid the struggles of steep climbs and rocky descents, the trek fostered a profound sense of connection among the participants. The experience was punctuated by milestones, such as women reaching heights over 5,000 meters for the first time, each success celebrated with tears of joy and laughter.

As the journey drew to a close, Tammy reflected on the emotional and sensory richness of the experience, holding onto the memories of the Andes and the friendships forged on the trails. With a small stone from the trek tucked away as a keepsake, she returned to Johannesburg, forever changed by the mountains and the empowering spirit of her fellow trekkers.
