Chilean Public Opinion Shifts: Falklands Viewed as British, Argentina Labeled Unreliable

By Editor • September 10, 2026 • 1 min read

A recent survey has revealed significant sentiments among Chileans regarding the Falkland Islands and their relationship with Argentina. Conducted by Cadem, the Plaza Pública poll found that a striking 68% of Chileans view the Falklands as British territory, a stance that contrasts sharply with the official position of their government.

This survey comes on the heels of Argentine President Javier Milei's visit to Santiago, where he met with Chile's President José Antonio Kast. The meeting has taken place amidst rising tensions over remarks made by Argentine officials regarding the Strait of Magellan, a vital waterway that both nations share.

Falklands and Argentina's Sovereignty Claims

When asked about the sovereignty of the Falklands, also known as the Malvinas Islands in Argentina, only 17% of the respondents identified them as Argentine territory, while 15% chose not to answer. This public opinion contrasts with Chile's official declaration, which supports Argentina's sovereignty claims. In fact, 62% of those surveyed disagreed with President Kast's affirmation of Chile's backing for Argentina's rights over the islands.

Concerns About Argentina as a Partner

The poll also highlighted a lack of trust in Argentina as a partner, with 60% of respondents deeming the nation unreliable. This sentiment is echoed by a significant majority, 69%, who believe that Argentina harbors territorial ambitions over Chile, following provocative statements from Argentine military officials. Additionally, 54% of Chileans believe that President Kast should push for the repeal of Argentine Decree 457/2021, which claims shared sovereignty over the Strait of Magellan.

In terms of international relations, Chileans expressed a clear preference for strengthening trade ties with countries like China and Canada, while only a small fraction views Argentina as a trustworthy ally.
