China Pioneers Iron Extraction from Waste Material

In a groundbreaking move, China has inaugurated an industrial-scale facility aimed at extracting iron from discarded mine tailings and ultra-low-grade ore. This innovative approach not only transforms waste into a valuable resource but also helps the nation reduce its reliance on imported iron.
According to a statement from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) released last Tuesday, the facility boasts a production line with the capacity to process an impressive 5.56 million tonnes of refractory iron ore and tailings annually. This marks a significant step in China’s efforts to address its iron needs sustainably.
As the largest consumer of iron ore globally, China's new initiative could potentially meet decades of domestic demand, showcasing the country’s commitment to resource efficiency and self-sufficiency in vital materials.
