Navigating Challenges: Hong Kong's New Yacht Scheme Faces Hurdles

Retired harbour pilot Alex Yu Chi-leung embarked on a journey aboard his 50-foot wooden yacht, Bowline, navigating from Hong Kong's Causeway Bay to Dongao Island in Zhuhai. This voyage marked his inaugural trip under the recently introduced cross-border yachting scheme. However, the thrill of the adventure was marred by bureaucratic complications and concerns about shallow waters.

During his voyage, Yu encountered a myriad of procedural challenges that left him questioning the viability of future trips. "If the procedures are simplified – because right now they are too numerous, I would consider going again," he remarked, highlighting the frustrations faced by recreational sailors.

The new scheme, aimed at promoting leisure yachting across borders, appears to have significant room for improvement. Despite its intentions, the existing bureaucratic red tape has cast a shadow over its potential success, leaving enthusiasts like Yu wary of their next adventure.
