Colchester: The Surprising Oldest Town in the UK

Colchester, located in Essex, has been officially recognized as the oldest recorded town in the UK, boasting a remarkable history of over 2,000 years. Surprisingly, this modern city, situated just 60 miles northeast of London, is a vibrant community rather than a mere archaeological site.
Originally known as Camulodunum in around AD 43, Colchester served as the first major Roman city and the initial capital of Roman Britain. Though it faced destruction during Boudica’s rebellion in AD 61, the settlement was rebuilt and continued to evolve through the centuries. After a period of neglect during the Anglo-Saxon era and Viking control, Colchester regained prominence under Edward the Elder in AD 917.
The construction of Colchester Castle in 1066 marked a significant moment in its history, as it became one of the largest Norman keeps in England. Interestingly, Colchester's origins trace back even further, as it began as an Iron Age settlement ruled by Cunobelin, the 'King of the Britons.' Today, remnants of its ancient past, including Iron Age and Roman artefacts, can be explored at local museums.
Adding to its historical significance, Colchester was granted city status in November 2022 as part of the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours, highlighting its blend of ancient roots and contemporary growth.
