Couple's Quest for Justice: The Fight to Clear a Woman's Name in a Notorious Double Murder Case

In a small Kansas town, a dedicated couple has devoted over 15 years to proving the innocence of Dana Chandler, a woman convicted of the 2002 double murder of her ex-husband and his girlfriend. Eileen and Keen Umbehr's obsession has turned into a passionate mission, highlighted in a new HBO docuseries titled 'A Killer Story.'

Chandler, now 66, is serving two life sentences for the murders of Mike Sisco and Karen Harkness, who were found shot in bed at Harkness’s home in Topeka. Despite her conviction, the Umbehrs believe in her innocence, leading them to uncover what they consider serious flaws in the prosecution's case. “When they arrested Dana, everybody believed they got the right person, except for us,” Eileen stated in the docuseries.

The Complicated Legal Saga

The road to justice has been fraught with complications, including an overturned conviction and a hung jury. Chandler's second conviction occurred just last year, following a contentious trial marred by accusations of deception against the prosecution. The Kansas Supreme Court condemned the actions of a prosecutor who misled the original jury, which reached a verdict in a mere 83 minutes.

Keen Umbehr emphasized their unwavering commitment, saying, “We’re just so committed to this case that there’s nothing else in life that matters.” As part of their efforts, the couple has even discussed selling their property to finance their crusade for Chandler.

Conflicting Views on Chandler's Guilt

Despite the Umbehrs' efforts, the evidence against Chandler remains substantial in the eyes of law enforcement. Retired Topeka police Sgt. Richard Volle, the lead detective, expressed his firm belief in Chandler’s guilt, stating, “I’m convinced. The family is convinced. Two juries were convinced.” He described Chandler as a skilled manipulator, asserting that she could easily lie.

Chandler’s case has received renewed attention through various media outlets, including a series of episodes on CBS's '48 Hours,' which played a pivotal role in bringing her story to the public. The couple's journey highlights the complexities of the legal system and the lengths to which some will go in the name of justice.
