Crypto's Political Influence Persists Despite Market Doldrums

By Editor • September 4, 2026 • 1 min read

Despite a notable downturn in the cryptocurrency market, the industry is flexing its political muscle ahead of the midterm elections. With Bitcoin prices significantly lower than last fall, crypto companies have invested over $206 million in this election cycle, outpacing other corporate sectors, including the burgeoning AI industry.

Fairshake's Dominance in Political Spending

Leading the charge is Fairshake, the crypto sector's most prominent super PAC, which has amassed a substantial war chest of approximately $193 million. This year alone, Fairshake has spent close to $70 million to support candidates who champion pro-crypto policies. Its backing has proven beneficial, with 50 out of the 54 candidates it supported winning their races, further solidifying its reputation as a formidable political force.

Changing Public Sentiment and Campaign Strategies

While the industry’s visibility has diminished, political candidates have increasingly incorporated anti-crypto rhetoric into their campaigns, often targeting opponents backed by crypto funding. Notably, Minnesota’s Peggy Flanagan criticized her rival for their financial ties to crypto and other industries. Despite the industry's financial backing, many voters remain skeptical of cryptocurrencies, with public discourse shifting towards other tech issues, such as data privacy and surveillance concerns.
